Everything you need to know about writing checks and using Papercheckwriter, all in one place.
Learn what to write on each line of a personal check, with a straightforward example.
Use a check issued by your bank or credit union. Make sure you have enough available funds and know the correct name of the recipient.
Write the current date on the date line, commonly in the upper-right corner. Avoid relying on a future date to prevent early processing.
On “Pay to the order of,” write the person’s legal name or the organization’s correct name. Double-check spelling before continuing.
In the small amount box, write the total with dollars and cents. For example, a payment of $84.25 is written $84.25.
On the long amount line, write Eighty-four and 25/100 dollars. The fraction represents cents. Your words should agree with the dollar box.
The memo is normally optional. You can note an invoice number, month of rent, or purpose of payment. Avoid putting confidential information there.
Sign using the signature you normally use with the account. Never hand someone a blank, signed check.
Examples for writing dollars and cents clearly on the amount line of a check.
Write the whole-dollar portion in words, followed by “and” and the cents as a fraction over 100. The format makes dollars and cents unambiguous.
| Amount | Write on the line |
|---|---|
| $5.00 | Five and 00/100 dollars |
| $17.08 | Seventeen and 08/100 dollars |
| $125.50 | One hundred twenty-five and 50/100 dollars |
| $1,250.75 | One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100 dollars |
| $10,004.01 | Ten thousand four and 01/100 dollars |
Use 00/100 to show that the payment does not include cents. For example, $50.00 becomes “Fifty and 00/100 dollars.”
Once the amount is written, many people draw a line through unused space to discourage changes. The exact appearance of check forms can vary.

Answers to common questions about payees, memos, check amounts, mistakes, and signatures.
Typically no. The memo is a helpful reference for what a payment covers, but the recipient or an organization may have specific instructions.
Yes. Always review both before signing. If you discover a mismatch, the safest approach is generally to void the check and write a new one.
Checks are commonly written using a fraction such as 50/100. Papercheckwriter uses that format consistently for clarity.
Ask the payee and your financial institution whether it is acceptable. If you are unsure, writing a replacement check is usually the clearest solution.
No. It is a visual writing guide only. It has no valid account credentials or authorization and is not a negotiable instrument.
